ROBERT N. MAITLAND II: When you're handling a divorce case, you can never forget that you are your client's first line of defense and usually last line of defense. The big picture from our standpoint is to make sure that our clients are fully protected.
Our first option is definitely to try to be amicable and resolve the situation. However, if negotiations are not going to work, we're fully prepared to go to court and litigate this however we have to advocate for our client's best interests.
ROBERT N. MAITLAND II: And in those situations, we can fight with the best of them. But our philosophy as a firm is to try to get people to where they need to be in the most effective, cost-effective, and least emotionally stressful way we can. In the divorce context, there's some clients that aren't on the paper. And those are usually the children. The important thing is with my client is to always talk to them and keep them in a place where they are looking at their legal rights but also looking at what maybe the best result might be and to try to navigate between those two extremes to get to a place where we can all say, okay, this is fair.
